API (Application Programming Interface)

An Application Programming Interface (API) is the code that governs the access point(s) for a server. It’s a structured way to allow applications to communicate with each other – defining the interactions between these software intermediaries, for example, which kind of different requests (or “calls”) can be made, what data formats to use, how file naming conventions should be followed. All so that information can be securely and efficiently be sent back and forth between a website or app and a user.
